Who we are

Phil Cook

Phil received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Gordon College, and also earned a Master of Arts degree in Teaching History from Salem State College. He is a certified teacher in Secondary Education (8-12).  He currently teaches History at Gloucester High School, where he has taught for the past seven years. He has extensive experience as a private tutor.  Phil is trained in standardized test preparation (SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE).  In addition to teaching and tutoring, Phil has coached baseball at Rockport High School and works as a volunteer youth leader at Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church in Danvers.

Ryan Murdoch

Ryan graduated from Gordon College with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with minors in English and Art. He has been licensed in the state of Massachusetts to teach English grades 8-12 and to teach Special Needs grades 5-12. He was trained to teach at the internationally known Landmark School in Beverly Farms, where he taught Geometry and English Language Arts Tutorials,  and in the Masters of Science in Special Needs program at Simmons College. He has taught and tutored in public and private High Schools and Middle Schools, in a wide range of subjects including, American History, English Language Arts, Algebra I and II,  Pre-Algebra, Basic Math, Geometry, Trigonometry, Biology, Chemistry, Political Philosophy, British Literature, American Literature, Earth Sciences, and has been a guest teacher in Creative Writing Poetry. He has had poetry published in the Gordon College fine arts magazine The Idiom. He had a short film featured in the Gordon College film festival. Ryan is currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Counseling at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is available for Special Needs consultations, tutoring in English Language Arts, Basic Math, Geometry, Algebra I and II, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Political Philosophy, American History, British and American Literature, Philosophy, and Psychology. Ryan specializes in working with students with mild to moderate special needs like dyslexia (language based learning disabilities), ADD and ADHD.

Aaron Clay

Aaron received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biblical Studies from Toccoa Falls College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.  While earning his degree Aaron tutored at the elementary level.  After graduation he spent six years teaching at an international school in Wuhan, China where he worked with students from over 15 different countries, often all in one classroom.  Due to the high ESL needs among many of his students he spent much one-on-one time tutoring and nurturing students’ learning at a variety of levels.  His teaching experience includes teaching middle and high school Bible, Art, Pre-Algebra and Geometry.  He also served as the school’s chess coach for a number of years.  Aaron is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Old Testament Studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary where he was awarded the David F. Wells Teaching Scholarship. Aaron’s goal after earning his graduate degree is to get back into the classroom.  He is available to tutor in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus & Biology.

Adam Smith

Adam Smith received his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Cedarville University and his Master of Arts (Summa Cum Laude) in Biblical Studies from Piedmont Baptist Graduate School. He worked as a chemist for Nestle and Abbot Nutrition. He also co-founded and managed a live-online education company. Adam has taught math and science at the high school and graduate level, and has extensive experience as a math and science tutor at the high school and collegiate leve. Adam is currently pursuing two more Master’s Degrees from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

Stephanie Smith

Stephanie Smith received her Bachelor of Science (Summa Cum Laude) in Bible and Secondary Education (Social Studies) from Baptist Bible College and Graduate School.  She is a certified teacher and has enjoyed a variety of educational positions, including substitute teaching in NY, student teaching in Asia, and full time work in a large private school in the D.C. area where she taught middle and high school students. While teaching, she worked individually with both gifted and special needs students, and tutored organizational methods and test taking techniques.  As Yearbook teacher, she worked in small groups and, more frequently, one-on-one, teaching English writing and language skills, including style and grammar. Since she left the formal classroom, she has pursued graduate studies, and has continued to edit writing for graduate students.  Stephanie is available to tutor students in writing and composition, study skills and organization, and core or elective social studies coursework.

Emily Cooper

Emily received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics and a Elementary Education from Minnesota State University. She has a teaching certificate both in Mathematics as well as Elementary education. She has three years of experience teaching and tutoring both middle school and high school level Math.  He she taught courses in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, and college Algebra . Emily also taught for three in China as an English language instructor. She teaches math study skills, problem-solving, test-taking skills and mathematical concepts. She has worked with students in public and private school settings and is available to tutor Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and College Algebra.

Mike Elmer

Mike studied Engineering at Georgia Tech with a minor in Spanish and then spent several years in Central America working in real estate development. He has professional tutoring experience teaching mathematics, physics and physical science, Spanish grammar and conversation, English grammar and writing, as well as SAT and ISEE/SSAT test preparation. Mike is currently working toward a Master of Divinity degree at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and has been tutoring since the days of his undergraduate studies. His personal style is to work with a common commitment to “know that you know that you know” the material, exemplified in the student’s ability to teach the material back to the tutor.
